What Happened
Villa Clara is experiencing a partial recovery of its electrical service following a nationwide grid collapse (SEN) on Monday. The province's electricity generation capacity is currently limited.
The collapse caused widespread power outages across the country.
Where and When
As of 7:30 AM on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Villa Clara had approximately 38 megawatts (MW) of available power. This limited supply was directed only to 28 strategic circuits in areas including Santa Clara, Sagua la Grande, Camajuaní, Manicaragua, and Cifuentes.
Substations in other municipalities had not yet received power restoration.
Why It's Important
This situation highlights the ongoing fragility of Cuba's national power infrastructure. The gradual restoration efforts and prioritization of strategic circuits indicate a significant challenge in meeting the energy demands of the entire province.
The inability to supply all areas underscores the potential for prolonged disruptions and the impact on daily life for residents in affected municipalities.
What Parties Say
Yadier Ruiz, the provincial Director of Load Dispatch, reported the limited generation figures. Authorities indicated that progressive restoration was expected for areas like Caibarién, Remedios, and Encrucijada.
However, immediate restoration was not anticipated for Quemado de Güines, Santo Domingo, Corralillo, and Ranchuelo. Ruiz mentioned that new generation parks and distributed generation units were expected to come online during the morning, supplementing existing power sources and the Hanabanilla hydroelectric plant.
What Comes Next
The recovery is expected to be gradual due to a generation deficit and several thermoelectric plants being offline for repairs or maintenance. The stated goal is to progressively supply electricity to residential circuits, with priority given to those experiencing the longest outages.
Progress is being made in re-establishing transmission links, with lines connecting to western Cuba via Cruces and to Sancti Spíritus now operational.
