Qué pasó

Eastern Cuba experienced a significant surge in seismic activity, with 14 earthquakes recorded within a 24-hour period. The majority of these tremors were concentrated in the Santiago de Cuba province.

These seismic events occurred between 6:00 AM on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, and 5:59 AM on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.

Dónde y cuándo

The most affected area was the Santiago-Baconao zone in Santiago de Cuba, which registered 11 of the total earthquakes. The magnitudes in this region ranged from 1.5 to 2.3.

Additionally, three other tremors were detected in the easternmost part of the country and its surroundings. One of magnitude 2.2 was located in the municipality of Imías, Guantánamo province. Two more occurred in the Paso de los Vientos-Gran Inagua area, with magnitudes between 2.5 and 3.5.

A separate seismic event of magnitude 3.7 was recorded north of Puerto Rico.

Por qué es importante

This heightened seismic activity draws attention to eastern Cuba's geological vulnerability. The region is situated near the boundary of the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes.

While these recent tremors have been of low magnitude, a succession of such events does not allow for predicting a larger, more intense earthquake. It underscores the importance of ongoing geological monitoring.

Qué dicen las partes

According to reports from the National Seismological Service of the National Center for Seismic Research (CENAIS), no material damages or injuries to persons have been reported as a consequence of these seismic movements.

Information was disseminated by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada and specialist Enrique Diego Arango Arias, based on CENAIS data.

Qué viene ahora

Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain informed through official reports from authorities like Civil Defense.

While current events are of low magnitude, continued monitoring is crucial for understanding seismic patterns in this geologically active region.
