Qué pasó

Two additional feminicides have been confirmed in Cuba by independent feminist organizations. These tragic events bring the total number of verified feminicides so far in 2026 to nine. The ongoing violence underscores a complex and challenging environment for tracking and verifying reports of gender-based violence.

The organizations documenting these cases are Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo en Cuba.

Dónde y cuándo

The first confirmed case involved Ana Yancy Guillot, who was attacked on March 7th in Pinar del Río. She was assaulted in a public area, allegedly by her partner.

The victim was taken to a hospital following the attack. Tragically, she later died from her injuries.

The second case is that of Olimpia Pérez, a 79-year-year-old woman who lived alone. Her attack occurred on March 2nd within her home in Mendoza, a rural area in the Mayabeque province.

Por qué es importante

These confirmed feminicides highlight a persistent and serious issue of gender-based violence in Cuba. The increasing number of cases, even with verification challenges, signals a critical need for greater attention and resources to protect women.

The difficulty in obtaining official information makes it harder for these organizations to fully track and report on the scope of the problem, suggesting the actual numbers could be higher.

Qué dicen las partes

The feminist organizations expressed their condolences to the adult daughter and other family members of Ana Yancy Guillot, as well as to the affected community.

They also extended their sympathies to the family of the alleged aggressor and urged the avoidance of retaliatory acts or vigilantism to prevent further violence.

Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo en Cuba are continuing to investigate other reported cases, including potential feminicides and attempts from both 2025 and 2026.

Qué viene ahora

As of March 11, 2026, nine feminicides and seven attempted feminicides have been confirmed for the year. An additional murder motivated by gender issues was also recorded.

The organizations will continue their efforts to monitor and verify cases, despite the ongoing obstacles related to information scarcity and access to confirmed data on gender violence in the country.
