Qué pasó
Cuba is experiencing a significant intensification of its energy crisis, with prolonged power outages affecting the entire country on Tuesday. The National Electric System (SEN) is struggling with a substantial generation deficit.
Authorities have warned that these disruptions will become even more severe during the evening peak hours, when electricity demand is at its highest.
Dónde y cuándo
The power outages have been constant throughout Monday and continued into the early hours of Tuesday. The system reported a deficit of 1,937 MW at 7:50 PM on Monday, exceeding initial predictions.
The situation worsened as unit 5 at the Renté thermoelectric plant failed to reconnect to the grid as planned. By 6:00 AM Tuesday, electricity generation availability was only 1,180 MW against a demand of 2,320 MW, resulting in a 1,165 MW service disruption.
Por qué es importante
These continuous blackouts severely disrupt the daily lives of Cubans, affecting households, businesses, and essential services. The persistent issues highlight the country's structural vulnerabilities in its electricity generation infrastructure.
The reliance on aging thermoelectric units that frequently operate below capacity creates a cycle of instability that impacts the entire nation's productivity and well-being.
Qué dicen las partes
Several thermoelectric plant units are offline due to technical failures. These include units at the CTE Mariel, CTE Diez de Octubre, CTE Felton, and CTE Antonio Maceo (Renté). Other plants have units undergoing maintenance.
Additionally, thermal generation limitations have taken 476 MW out of service. Despite this, 51 solar photovoltaic parks contributed 4,041 MWh of energy on Monday, with a peak generation of 722 MW.
Qué viene ahora
Officials anticipate unit 5 of the Renté CTE might come online later Tuesday, adding 70 MW. However, the overall situation is expected to remain challenging.
For the evening peak, a generation availability of 1,250 MW is projected against a demand of 3,100 MW, leading to an estimated deficit of 1,850 MW, potentially causing blackouts of up to 1,880 MW nationwide if conditions hold.
